Germy Wormy Give-Away: Helping preschoolers prevent the spread of germs!

This give-away is now closed! Winner to be announced on Monday!

Trying to teach preschoolers how to wash their hands and use a tissue can be a challenging prospect.

When I attended the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) conference this year, I met a very nice lady with a great new product and DVD to help teach young children about how to prevent the spread of germs.

Germ Smart for Kids!

The little tissues in the box are actually sleeves that go around the child's elbow. There is a little wormy on each sleeve and the children are then taught that when they are ready to sneeze or cough to do so on the little worm inside the sleeve.  Here is a picture of me (which is certainly not as cute as a little boy or girl) to show you the idea.

I have to say that what completely sold me on the Germy Wormy products is the DVD that comes as part of the educational set. The DVD is awesome - funny, cute, smart, and a great teaching tool for a group of young children whether at home or at school. In the DVD, the little puppet characters get taught by Germy Wormy on how to make sure germs are not spread onto crayons, toys, food, and each other. The video then gives a real life discussion of how to prevent germs with the help of "real" children.  The sleeves make it fun and easy for children to cover their nose and mouth - and the video makes it fun for teachers or parents to teach children about how to prevent the spread of germs!

Enter the Germy Wormy Give-Away!

  1. What a wonderful and fun way to teach and learn...as the website states "Customers are reporting a 50% reduction in colds and flu's for children and others around them." I would LOVE to give this a try.....

  2. I love the video of the little guy using the sleeve! It really shows how well it works. And even though I am a preschool teacher, I was not aware that children could be sick 30-60 days A YEAR!! That's a lot! I try to teach my kids to "let your sleeve catch your sneeze" but these bands would be much easier.

  3. We all teach our kids to cough and sneeze into your sleeve, but it never dawned on me (not sure why!!) that it's another way to spread germs! Guess I just had my lightbulb moment!!!!! I'll be investing in this (if I don't win it first!! :) ) Definitely has to help with those nasty germs!!

  4. We just did our own 'germ' day at school. I taught them to sneeze/cough into their elbow. This sleeve would be such a great visual reminder (and no goopy sleeves)!
    I loved this:
"Reduce how much you spend on treating colds and flu's.
Invest in prevention and raise kids Germ Smarts with Germy Wormy!" It's so true...how much time do we use going around chasing them with a tissue, germx and telling them to go wash your hands!!!! :)
    Thx! Jessi Feltmann

  5. As a KDG teacher, I know about the nasty sneezes all to well. I love the idea of these sleeve tissues. It is a little visual reminder to help them develop the habit. "Spread the word, not the germs." I like that little phrase. Thanks for telling us about this product, I had never heard of anything like it before.

  6. As a mother, childcare provider and a nursery director, I've always taught kids to cough and sneeze into their elbows. I had not heard of these sleeves. I am going to have to get some of these. Maybe my kiddos, like the website says, will go from being "unconcious about germs (or maybe it's just not getting it) to willing partners to help stop the spread of germs." And wow to have
"Customers are reporting a 50% reduction in colds and flu's for children and others around them." Definitely something to check into further. Thanks

  7. As a mother, childcare provider and a preschool director, I've always taught kids to cough and sneeze into their elbows. I agree that kids sleeves can get very ugly and nasty when they do this. I'm going to get some for my school and pass the word to my parents. Like the website says "unconscious about germs .... to willing partners to help stop the spread of germs."

To have "Customers are reporting a 50% reduction in colds and flu's for children and others around them." With the H1N1 going around who wouldn't want to be germ free. Thanks

  8. As a Head Start Teacher, we are always trying to get the kids to stay safe and be healthy. Whenever we get the children to take ownership or buy in, success is sure to follow. This sounds like a wonderful idea to get the kids to buy in to keeping healthy and clean.

The website had many great points...They quickly go from being unconcious about germs to a willing partner with you in stopping the spread of germs and creating a healthy home, classroom and community!

Sounds like a win win to me.

  9. I'd love to try out a sneeze sleeve... as a K teacher, I've been sneezed ON more than once and it isn't pretty or fun. :)

  10. Hmm...they have had some good press already. Good for them. Are these biodegradable? Flushable? Just curious...they run an affiliate program, too, I see (can you tell I am in marketing? LOL). The site states that by using their product you will reduce what you spend to treat colds and bugs. That's a good thing.

  11. This is an incredible idea! I would love the opportunity to try it out in my preschool classroom. It is sometimes hard for the kids to remember to cough/sneeze into their sleeve but I think with the cute little worm to remind them, they will catch on much quicker! I also think that having a disposable sleeve to catch the "goop" is a wonderful idea...

  12. I love this idea. My preschoolers don't understand the concept of coughing and sneezing into their elbow. This would be a great teaching aid. I love the fact that they have a disposable place for the germs too.

  14. I like the fact that this program is being used by 3 and 4 year olds with severe cognitive delays. That let's me know that it can be utilized in any learning community.

It is a really neat way to teach health and promote germ control.

  20. This sleeve is great and to cut back on 50% of the flu for a child and the children around them would be wonderful. I can't wait until they come out with the washable sleeve that they are currently working on. Thank you for this opportunity, I just found you blog and I love it:)

  22. Thanks for the opportunity to enter the Germy Wormy giveaway! The page says the kit
"teaches kids all about germs, what they are, where they are, what they do and what to do to avoid getting them and sharing them...." I LOVE being able to explain "whys" and "hows" to my kids. They are always asking these questions and to be able to have answers for them in a format they can understand---awesome!

    Thanks for sharing!

  23. Ok, this is a great product. I wish I could have thought of something as awesome. The web site also lists that Germy Wormy Disposable Sleeves are also distributed on the Discount School Supply Site for those of you with an account there.

  24. This is really great!! I own and run a in-home child care, I've done this for 10+ years, I also have 5 kids of my own. This fall I became super sick and spent 3 weeks in the hospital in isolation and part of that in ICU. At the time everyone thought I had H1N1. I was sure I had picked it up from all the kids and could not think of going back to work. I have never been so sick. Luckily, it ended up being something else that is not contagious and I'm back at work. But WOW what a germ eye opener that was!! Would love to try the Germy Wormy sleeves and video with ALL my kids!!

  25. I am looking forward to using the Germy Wormy system. I love the poster that can reinforce what the children already learned watching the DVD.
I have been trying to teach my pre-k class about germs and proper health - but I feel that these learning materials will give me the boost and reinforcement needed. A 50% reduction in colds and flu's is a welcome bonus for any child care center.

  27. I would love to try the Germy Wormy in my daycare. I especially like the answer to the kids that will "fake" sneeze to get to use one. "Germs are like ice ream to a Germy Wormy but you wouldn't want face ice cream would you?" Got to love the logic of that!
