Open Them Shut Them

Open Them Shut Them

This familiar fingerplay will help calm students down and gain their attention. Once you have their attention, move right on into the next activity you have planned to do.

Open them, shut them,

Open them, shut them,
Give a little clap, clap, clap.
(children clap their hands together three times)

Open them, shut them,
Open them, shut them,
Lay them in your lap, lap, lap.

(Children lay their hands in their lap)

Remember! Always be thinking ahead. When you finish the fingerplay and the children are all quiet and looking at you, that's your cue to start what's next.

Be consistent! Don't start the fingerplay until you are really ready to capture their undivided attention and keep it. If you get their attention then jump up to grab a book, then you will lose their attention and have to start all over again.
